Targeting is a simple and powerful tool enabling the ability to fine tune which visitors will see a particular bar.
A Target is composed of a single condition or multiple conditions. The Target can be set to require all conditions specified or one or more conditions that are specified.
All: This option will only display the bars for a Target if all the conditions are met.
Any: This option will display the bars for a Target if one or more of the conditions are met.
A Condition is simply a requirement that needs to be met before a Target is valid for a specific bar. Conditions are made up of three options.
Segment: Specific type of segment that the condition should check.
Rule: This option is used to bridge the Segment and Value options.
Value: This is your specific value that makes the condition valid.
All this might sound a bit complex, but it is very simple. Start by selecting a Segment type, this can be set to a few options. Let’s use Device for our example. Once the Device Segment is selected, let’s select a Rule. There are a few options available for Rules. The Rule options will also vary for different Segments. For our example, let’s select is. Lastly, for our Value, let’s select Mobile. The Value options will also vary depending on the Segment type that is selected.
The example condition we’ve created in this example reads as: This Target is valid if the visitor is using a mobile device. Multiple conditions can be added to a Target to fine tune when a bar should be displayed to a visitor.
These examples can be applied to a new bar or an existing bar by selecting Other in the Targeting drop down options. All examples assume there is only a single bar. Bars that are A/B tested will work fine using the examples below.
Target a specific referrer
In this example, we will target a bar to visitors that were referred from any page from a specific URL. We will use http://www.Pintrest.com as the referrer URL.
- Start by adding a new condition and selecting “Referrer” as the Segment type.
- Next, select “includes” as our Rule option.
- Enter URL in the Value field. For this example the URL option is “Pinterest”, meaning users coming from Pintrest.com using a link back to your website will only see the popup.
The bar for a specific Target will be displayed to a user if they were referred from any page on http://www.hellobar.com.
Target a specific date
In this example, we will target a bar to visitors that visited a page before a specific date. This can be helpful if you’d like to promote an event before the event date.
- Start by adding a new condition and select “Date” as the Segment type.
- Next, select “is before” as the Rule option.
- Enter or select a date in the Value field.
The bar for this Target will be displayed to visitors before the date specified in the Value field.
Target a specific URL
In this example we will target a bar for a specific page on your site. The URL Path for a page we will use is, http://www.hellobar.com/use-cases.
- Start by adding a new condition and select “URL Path” as the Segment type.
- Next, select “IS” as the Rule option.
- Enter the URL Path in the Value field. For this example the URL Path – IS – /use-cases
